“The Old Mill” originally known as dunnings mill is recorded in documents to go back as far as 1713, but is thought to be much older. According to records in 1469, the area was known as ‘Donnyngesfeld’. So named, because the land owners name was Donnyng. Over time, these origins also helped shape the naming of surrounding roads, the farm and also the mill. The Mill was a flour mill, evidence of which can still be found in the pub garden where you can find one of the old mill stones!
The actual mill was demolished early in the 20th century, as factories everywhere replaced water mills and the pond was drained. Today, remains a small stream that still passes under what was the mill, via a working replica of the old water wheel.
A Harvey’s of lewes pub, it was taken over by W & H two years ago. The pub then, changed its name from ‘dunnings mill’ to, the old mill, and underwent a complete transformation from a very run-down pub, to what is now a successful traditional pub, with a contemporary feel.
