An adapted sixteenth century house with a mainly twentieth century garden. 'Kew in the country' is managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens. The ornamental area near the house is in the Arts and Crafts style and the woodland garden is in the picturesque/gardenesque style. The woodlands contain both native and exotic temperate trees and shrubs. The 200 hectares (500 acres) at Wakehurst Place include walled gardens, water gardens, a wetland conservation area, woodland, lakes and ponds. Four National Collections plus rare and exotic plants from the Himalayas and the southern hemisphere, and the Millennium Seed Bank, are among the highlights. |
